Jaina Cipriano

The Interview Q&A

Where are you primarily based out of?

Lowell, MA

What role do you typically play on set?

Either directing or art directing

How long have you been working in the film industry? Where did you get your start?

In 2019 I wrote my first short film - You Don't Have to Take Orders from the Moon and filmed it with a small crew of friends. That was my entrance into the film world. For years before that I was working on photos.

Who is your biggest inspiration? What have they taught you?

David Lynch - if you watch his direction, he is so surreal and out there, but he is also so kind and tuned into his actors and collaborators. He is a director with a serious sense of design, which always reassures me that you can do more than one thing on set!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I study media a lot. I watch TV, movies, theater and pay attention to where my heart jumps into my throat - and then I write about it. What made me feel that way? How did they accomplish it? How could I make others feel that way?

What does it mean to you to be an inspiration/mentor to someone else?

Facing your fears and showing people that there is a path through the unknown. "If she can do it, maybe I can too!"

What’s are some of the biggest things you’ve accomplished in your career so far?

I've written, directed and filmed two original short films. I've founded a design and fabrication studio building sets and props for TV and movies. I have my first immersive art gallery show this year as well!

If you had one message to share with the world, what would it be?

Fall in love with the process and nothing will deter you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? (No dream is too big!)

Building bigger and bigger things.

If you had one piece of advice for a woman who wants to get started in the film industry what it would be?

Don't let your doubts stop you - the industry is so vast, there is a place for you if you want it!

What does being a part of The Women in Film Project mean to you?

Maggie Gyllenhaal talks about how a lot of the true experiences of being a woman are at the edges of the media we consume, but rarely front and center. I want to change that. The world needs more woman's stories.
