“ It's important to have people who understand your experience and are able to lift you up when it gets hard, and to have a safe space to ask questions, make friends, and find mentors who want you to succeed.”

The Interview Q&A

Where are you primarily based out of?

I am based out of Tempe, Arizona

What role do you typically play on set?

Film Composer

How long have you been working in the film industry? Where did you get your start?

I have been working full time for about 2 years now, but I have been working in film for about 6 years, after I started scoring student films at Arizona State University during my undergrad.

Who is your biggest inspiration? What have they taught you?

My biggest inspiration is my mom, who taught me to always stand my ground, fight for what I deserve, to show love and compassion to everyone, and that being an artist is a calling worthy of respect. She has always been honest with me about my work, and taught me to never accept mediocrity, but also to not fall victim to perfectionism. She also taught me to never settle in situations where I am not valued, and that I should never shrink myself, even when I am in a room full of men.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I feel inspired by so many things. The composers around me, who I look up to -- I love seeing how they think outside the box and challenge the audience to explore a new sonic world. A special shoutout to Hildur Gudnadottir, Catherine Joy, Drum & Lace, Cristobal Tapia de Veer, and Ilan Eshkeri! I am inspired by producers and artists like Labrinth, Bad Bunny, and Doja Cat, who are always innovating and staying true to themselves. I feel inspired by engaging with art (books, films, shows, dance) constantly and exposing myself to all sorts of cultures and genres. I feel inspired by my friends and family, who always push me to be my best self. And of course I am inspired by the greats of the film scoring world, like John Williams, Danny Elfman, and Jerry Goldsmith.

What’s are some of the biggest things you’ve accomplished in your career so far?

I scored a documentary with Dr. Jane Goodall before graduating college, I have traveled the world premiering my music in places like Vienna and New York City, I have worked with big names in the industry, I conducted my own music with the Hollywood Studio Orchestra, I have performed and scored contemporary dance works, and I am lucky to be able to work with filmmakers all over the world!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? (No dream is too big!)

I see myself scoring studio films! I also see myself still learning new skills and honing my abilities, as well as continuing to teach and mentor beginner/young musicians (I currently teach at a music conservatory as well as composing).

If you had one piece of advice for a woman who wants to get started in the film industry what it would be?

Find your community, particularly of women in your field. (For me, that is the Alliance for Women Film Composers) It's so important to have people who understand your experience and are able to help and lift you up when it gets hard, and to have a safe space to ask questions, make friends, and find mentors who value you and want you to succeed.
